One of my all time favorite herbs and elixirs is reishi mushroom with raw cacao. Firstly I want to introduce Ganoderma lucidum, or reishi is called the king of herbs in TCM – this medicinal mushroom is a powerful adaptogenic, immune modulating, liver healing and cancer treatment medicine. Reishi is high in antioxidants and scavenges free radicals, it’s an anti-viral, anti-fungal and is wonderful to add to any cleanse you are doing.
I found in high doses that it helps with herxheimer reaction- “herxing”- whenever there is a lot of die-off from a particular pathogen- whether it be viral, bacterial, parasitic, or cancer, reishi helps regulate the immune system down with its immune modulating compounds. Adaptogenic herbs help the nervous system regulate and balance out the body’s response to stress, it’s protective and supportive of the body’s natural healing abilities. Check out Paul Stamet’s talk on mushrooms as medicine.
Many years ago I was doing parasite and tickborne-illness/Lyme cleansing. I also had multiple viral infections that every time I would detox some repressed virus would come out. I would break out with shingles and at one point it was on my shin and spreading on face. Reishi in high doses, around 4,000-6,000 mg a day I took for a year- the next year I cut the dose in half. It was an expensive part of the protocol, but it worked at such a deep level it really helped me get the viral- load down..I was symptomatic with Epstein Barr, candida, and parasites, leaky gut and had to have my mercury fillings removed. Reishi assisted in the clean up of heavy metals and allowed my chronic candida to heal. I highly recommend reishi for any type of herbal chelation therapy combined with binders like chlorella, cilantro extract, and zeolites for example.
Another story is that I recommended Host Defense to a friend with breast cancer and along with organic juicing, organic vegan diet, enemas, chlorella, iodine, water-fasting, and far infrared sauna therapy- she is having great results and the tumor is shrinking.
I would say it’s one of those things you should always turn to in the time of rebalancing your immune system- it works on so many levels and grounds and calms the body in a unique way…strengthening and tonifying the nervous system and gut. It has a broad-spectrum effect on viruses and bacteria making a wonderful medicine for Lyme disease and other auto-immune like symptoms. Note this protocol is based on my experience and not intended to cure any specific disease.
Alphay, is the reishi I took high doses of. It’s a great company with some of the purest reishi from China. It is organic, gmo-free. They make different formulas based on TCM organ systems. This is a MLM company but if you are willing to go thru the process and sell it you can save money and have it pay for itself. If I was going to take high doses for some time- for like a year to build up my immune system, I would use this company.
Other reputable bioavailable brands you can use are Paul Stamets Host Defense, Comprehensive Immune Support– his line of mushrooms are pure and he is one of the lead researchers on mycelium. I have also bought wild-crafted reishi tincture from local herbalist, Dan de Lion www.returntonature.us – supporting herbalists who wildcraft and forage mushrooms and herbs in an ethical way is very important for sustaining the eco-system. It also empowers the medicine picker to be more part of the healing process and helping the plant regenerate itself. You can forage for your own red reishi in upstate, NY, and tincture it in organic 70% grain alcohol or vodka –
Now for Cacao-
Ayurveda has something wonderful to say about dark chocolate and the health of the microbiome. John Douillard, ayurvedic doctor explains:
Reishi Cacao Elixir Recipe
Now to the recipe that synergistically pulls together earthy, bitter, grounded heart-opening cacao with reishi. I use Navita’s Organics Cacao Powder. You can use any cacao you want- there are more traditional ways of preparing cacao and you are free to experiment with that. I do use organic. Here is a traditional way of preparing cacao for a ceremony and these intentional methods are great for preparing any food as medicine
To begin boil filtered water in a tea kettle.
